Hideyoshi: The Taiko
The peasant's son who finished uniting Japan, from a portrait dated 1598.
Who was this?
- Toyotomi Hideyoshi was born a peasant's son in Owari Province and began as a foot soldier for Oda Nobunaga, rising to become one of his top generals. After Nobunaga's death in 1582, he took over the job of uniting Japan.
- In 1585 the imperial court named him Kampaku (imperial regent). In 1590 he completed the unification of a country that had been torn by civil war for over a century. Later he took the title Taikō, meaning retired regent. He died in 1598.
- The art is based on a portrait of him attributed to Kanō Mitsunobu, with an inscription dated 1598, kept at Kōdai-ji temple in Kyoto. The red circle stands for Japan's rising sun, and the vertical characters spell his name, 豊臣秀吉.
