Hideyoshi: The Unifier
Born a peasant's son, he rose to rule all of Japan. His panel from our Three Unifiers shirt.
Who was this?
- Toyotomi Hideyoshi was born a peasant's son in Owari Province, near today's Nagoya. He started as a foot soldier for the warlord Oda Nobunaga and rose to become one of his top generals.
- After Nobunaga was killed in 1582, Hideyoshi carried on his work. The imperial court made him Kampaku (imperial regent) in 1585, and in 1590 he completed the unification of Japan.
- He later passed the regent's office to his nephew and took the title Taikō, the name for a retired regent. He died in 1598. This art is his panel from our Three Unifiers of Japan shirt, with his name, 豊臣秀吉, above it.
