The Three Unifiers of Japan

Three warlords who turned 100 years of civil war into one Japan.

Who was this?

  • Around 1550, Japan was split into dozens of warring territories, a period called the Warring States era.
  • Three men finished the job one after another: Oda Nobunaga broke the old powers, Toyotomi Hideyoshi united the country, and Tokugawa Ieyasu made the peace stick.
  • Their peace lasted about 250 years. The front shows a symbol for each man under the words 天下統一, which means "unify the realm."
